What Smile stores and where

Mental Health: Smile keeps almost everything on your device. Your profile name, self-test results, journal entries, mood check-ins, daily streak, and course progress are saved locally in your phone's app storage, not on a server we control. We do not create an account for you, and we do not ask for your email, phone number, or any sign-in credential to use the app.

What we do not collect

We do not collect your name in any way that identifies you to us, and we cannot see your journal entries, mood history, or test answers. They never leave your device unless you turn on AI replies (described below) or choose to back them up yourself through your own phone tools. We do not build advertising profiles from your reflections, and we do not sell personal data to anyone.

Purchases

If you buy Premium, the purchase is handled entirely by Google Play Billing or the Apple App Store (depending on your phone) through RevenueCat, our subscription management provider. RevenueCat receives your purchase token, product identifier, and an anonymous device identifier so it can verify your subscription; it does not receive your name, journal content, or test results. We never see your card details, since Google Play or Apple processes all payments directly.

App usage statistics

On Android, Smile uses Google Analytics for Firebase to count how the app is used, so we can see what works and measure our own ads. It records general events such as opening the app, finishing onboarding, completing a self-test, or saving a journal entry, together with an app instance identifier and basic device information. It never records which test you took, your scores, your moods, or anything you write. The iPhone app does not include this.

Ads

On Android, Smile shows optional rewarded ads through Google AdMob to unlock extra content if you are on the free plan; Premium removes ads entirely. The iPhone app shows no ads and contains no advertising SDK. AdMob may use advertising identifiers to personalize ads, and in the EEA and UK we ask for your consent before any personalized ad loads, following an industry consent framework. You can review or withdraw that consent any time from Me, under Privacy options.

Voice input

When you tap the microphone to journal by voice, your phone's own speech recognition service (Android's or Apple's) turns the audio into text; that audio never passes through our reply service or any other server we run. We only keep the words you choose to save as a journal entry, and the audio itself is discarded by the speech service once transcription finishes.

AI journal replies (optional)

If you turn on AI replies, Smile sends the entry you just wrote, your mood and the feeling and influence tags you picked, and short excerpts of up to seven of your most recent entries over an encrypted connection to our reply service, which runs on Cloudflare. That service forwards the same text to Anthropic's Claude API, or, if Claude is unavailable, to a language model hosted by Cloudflare, so one short reply can be written. Nothing else about you is sent: no name, no test results, and no device details beyond the random identifier described next.

Our reply service keeps no copy of what you write. The only thing it stores is a daily request counter tied to a random device identifier the app creates, which expires after 48 hours and exists solely to cap how many replies one device can request per day. Anthropic retains API inputs briefly for abuse monitoring and does not use them to train its models, and Cloudflare does not train on them either. Replies are generated automatically and are not medical advice.

AI replies are off by default. The first time a reply could use them, Smile asks you once inside the app, and you can change your answer at any time from Me, under AI journal replies. When they are off, replies are generated on your device from templates and nothing leaves your phone. Turning them on requires an active Premium subscription or trial, and turning them off takes effect immediately.

Like any internet request, a call to the reply service also carries your connection details, such as your IP address and the standard headers your phone's browser engine sends. Cloudflare processes those to route the request and protect the service from abuse, under its own privacy terms, and may keep short-lived edge logs of them. Smile does not store, look up, or use your IP address for anything, and the reply itself is never tied to it.

Notifications

If you turn on the daily reminder in Me, Smile schedules one local notification at 9:00 each day to nudge you to check in. This notification is generated and delivered entirely on your device using the phone's own notification system; nothing about your reminder schedule, or whether you open it, is sent anywhere. You can turn the reminder off at any time from that same settings toggle.

Deleting your data

You can erase everything Smile has stored by going to Me, then Delete all my data, and confirming the prompt. This immediately clears your profile, journal, test results, streak, and entitlement flags from the device. Uninstalling the app has the same effect, since nothing is kept anywhere else. Deleting your data does not cancel an active subscription; manage that separately in Google Play or in your Apple ID settings. Deleting your data also resets the random device identifier used by the AI reply counter.

Children

Smile is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them. Because the app does not require an account and keeps data on the device rather than on a server, we have no practical way to check a user's age at all. If you believe a child has used the app in a way that concerns you, please uninstall it and contact us.

Changes

We may update this policy as the app changes, for example if we add a feature that changes what stays on your device. When we do, we will update the "Updated" date at the top of this page and, for significant changes, mention it inside the app itself. Continuing to use Smile after an update means you accept the revised policy.

Contact

If you have questions about this policy, or about how Smile handles information on your device, contact us at mochitg45@gmail.com. We read every message and do our best to reply within a reasonable time. This app is maintained by a small team, so please be patient if a reply takes a few days.
